Here's your IELTS Writing Task 2 composition title...

10. Spending too much time at work can have a bad effect on people’s health and the quality of their lives. The working week should be limited to 37.5 hours a week in all countries of the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree?. Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
For this question, you could decide on the conclusion first, and then write paragraphs to support that conclcusion. For example, you could conclude that government restrictions are not the answer, and people must change their habits. Lead up to the conclusion with various examples of how government restrictions concerning traffic reduction are not very successful. Starting with a conclusion and working backwards is often a good way to plan a composition.

Introduction

This topic is much discussed in my country. Working weeks of 50 hours or more are not uncommon, and there are regular reports in the media of people working for 60, 70 and even 80 hours a weeks.

Body paragraph 1

The ill-effects of this are obvious. Levels of stress are very high for many workers, and work-related health problems are widespread. The impact of long working hours on family life can be considerable. Many parents barely see their children during the week, and are too exhausted to do anything with them at the weekends.

Body paragraph 2

Like many people, I think there should be legislation to limit the working week. 37.5 would perhaps be an unrealistic expectation in my country, but a limit of 45 hours a week seems reasonable to me. I do not believe this would have a serious impact on the economy, as relaxed healthy workers are likely to be more productive than stressed unhealthy ones.

Body paragraph 3

The problem is not only that many employers do not want such a limitation, but also many working people are opposed to it. The culture in my country is one of hard work and self-sacrifice. The truth is, many people choose to work such long hours. Their contracts are for around 40 hours a week, and the extra hours they put in are entirely voluntary.

Conclusion

Legislating for a shorter working week would be one solution, but perhaps a better solution would be a change in attitudes, with people thinking more about the quality of their lives than spending the maximum amount of time possible at work.
